Notes to Gegenheimer Website

Letter from Thelma L. Gahimer

My name is Thelma (Crafton) Gahimer.  My husband – Troy Edward Gahimer -  is a descendant of Johann Jacob and Maria (Deprez) Gegenhiemer.  I would like to submit my husband’s ancestry as we know it.

We found the Gegenheimer name was changed to Gahimer around Michael’s Generation.  His brother, William, was married to a woman by the name of Catherine who died when she was only 24 yrs old.  She is buried in the Zion Church Cemetery, Shelby County, Indiana as Catherine Gegenheimer.  William later married a woman name Salome Hirtzel.  When these two were buried the name on their stone is Gahimer.  The reason for this change may be the American way of butchering family names.  Johann Jacob bought land in Rush County and the deed held the correct spelling of the name.  In the 1840 Census, the name was listed as Jacob Gaghamer.  When Michael married Margaret, his name was written Gegenheiner.  Maybe there were legal issues and maybe they just thought it would be easier.

We will update any other information as we find it and would love any information from Johann George on back.  I am also including a family picture taken about 2003.  The kids are older now but we have nothing more current.

 Thank you,

Thelma L. Gahimer
