Man was an angel to family

Our Christmas angel came this year on a Tuesday afternoon. He arrived at the Oxford Cemetery driving a dark blue four-door sedan. His name is Dan Goldberry.

We had gone out on this cold winter afternoon to help our 93-year-old mother put a holiday wreath on her husband and our father's grave. It was a winter day with the sun shining on snowy fields.

Our task was almost completed when we discovered we were locked out of the car. The temperature was seven degrees and the wind was blowing. We had dressed lightly, expecting to be outdoors only a short time.

We saw a farmhouse in the distance. Our mother could not walk that distance so she huddled against the sunny side of the car for protection. Her son stayed with her while I started for the farm.

This is when our angel came down the road. Dan stopped his car and invited us into its warm interior. This modern angel used his cell phone to contact the sheriff's office for help. We would certainly have had frostbite, if we had spent the hour in the sub-freezing weather.

Dan generously and patiently waited with us on the country road, giving up most of his afternoon, until our car was finally unlocked. We wanted to give him some compensation, but he insisted it wasn't necessary and drove off before we could retrieve our wallets from inside our car.

Not only did he probably save our lives, he also gave us the gift of the true Christmas spirit. Thank you, Dan Goldberry, for being a Christmas angel.
