BEHIND THE WHISTLE

Three south-metro high schools have new head coaches this season, and all of them have significant changes planned. Here is a look at the new faces and their outlooks.

Matt Gegenheimer, Prior Lake

Previous job: Prior Lake defensive coordinator, 2002-05.

Head coaching experience: None

New ideas:

• A more modern offense: Gegenheimer plans to convert the Lakers' old wing-T attack to a pro-form offense with multiple formations. "You'll see us throw a little more," he said. "It's a good change for the team and the fans."

• More strength training: "We want kids to know that if they're not in season with another sport, they're training. It's an expectation."

• More connection with the feeder system: Gegenheimer hired three new ninth-grade coaches, and he envisions a connection with youth programs that will allow him to teach Prior Lake's defense at the elementary school level. "We want to think of it as a third- through 12th-grade program," he said. "You're doing the same stuff, but it gets a little more complicated."
