HAROLD A. BOLKSMr. Harold Bolks, age
94, of Hull, passed away on Wednesday, December 7, at the Sioux Center
Community Hospital.
There will be a
memorial service on Saturday, December 10, at 10:30am, in the original
sanctuary of the American Reformed Church in Hull. The Rev. Steven
Bierly will officiate. Visitation with the family will be during the
fellowship time following the memorial service at the church.
There will be a prayer
service on Friday, at 3:30pm, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull.
Interment will follow the prayer service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.
Harold Albertus was
born on November 9, 1911, in Hamilton Michigan, the son of John Bliss
and Ruth (Weaver) Bolks. He was raised on a farm near Hull. He attended
country school for eight years and then completed two years at the Hull
High School.
On June 28, 1932, he
married Augusta Emma De Boer in Doon. They farmed near Hull until 1936,
when they moved into town. He then operated Bolks Meats and Lockers in
Hull. Later, he was an automobile mechanic and became a partner in the
Ford dealership in Hull. In more recent years, he was a salesman at D. &
S. Chevrolet in Hull.
Mr. Bolks was a member
of the American Reformed Church.
He was a faithful
volunteer at the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, where he developed
warm and caring relationships with many of the residents.
Harold enjoyed
repairing clocks and watches, as well as many small appliances.
Survivors include his
wife of more than 73 years; two sons and their wives, Harvey and Annabel
Bolks, of Rock Valley; and Lauren and Hester Bolks, of Gilbert, Arizona;
two daughters, Evelyn Jones, of Cedar Rapids; and Marlys, and her
husband, Willard Rowenhorst, of Orange City; eleven grandchildren, Roma
Visser, Verlyn Bolks, Sherwin Bolks, Tamra Guthmiller, Kirsten Lewis,
Todd Bolks, Ward Jones, Sheila Krull, Donita Hansen, Maria McGinley, and
Valora De Bruin; 23 great-grandchildren; three
great-great-grandchildren; a sister, LaVonne Kroese, of Sheldon; a
brother, Alfred Bolks, of Sioux Center; and many nephews and nieces.
In addition to his
parents, he was preceded in death by two great-grandchildren, Hannah Rae
Guthmiller and Nathaniel James Lewis; a brother, Lloyd Bolks; and four
sisters, Hazel De Boer, Esther Kooiker, Irma Zwiep-Derr; and Viola
Gurkink.
