• Go, go Griffins: Five of seven runners finish in top 10
CRETE — Lincoln-Way East placed sixth in the prestigious Crete-Monee
Pow Wow Saturday, finishing with 59 points. Palatine (13) won and was
followed by Sandburg (24), Waubonsie Valley (25), Wheaton Warrenville
South (48), New Trier (56) and Lincoln-Way East.
Miles Scott Stirn was 15th (16:03.7) in the first flight. Ron Revord
was sixth in the second flight. Nathan Troester was seventh in third
flight. In flight 4, Joe Hosty was eighth. Mark Ferierra was seventh in
flight five. Matt Newman was fourth in flight six and Jeff O'Brien was
13th in flight 7.
Joliet Township finished 13th out of 40 teams with 116 points.
In the first flight, Jim Georgantis finished 16th with a time of
16:06. Other Steelmen runners were: Flight 2, Chris Wedge, 15th, 16:44;
Flight 3, Cameron Pendleton, 18th, 17:06; Flight 4, George Pecoraro,
16th, 17:03; Flight 5, Brett Scheuber, 20th, 17:46; Flight 6, Ed
Zaworski, 15th, 17:30; and Flight 7, Tyler Tschida, 17th, 17:48.
"We were real pleased with our finish today," JT coach Doug Cherry
said. "We feel like we have decent depth, and all the guys stepped up
today and ran well. We are excited for the end of the year."
Lincoln-Way Central was 16th with 123 points. Mark Battista was third
in the championship flight, clocking a 15:07.8. Steve Erbeck was 29th in
second flight. Beau Bielecki was 20th in third flight. Joe Korte placed
17th in flight four. Mike Hoff was 21st in flight five, Dan Carillo was
16th in the sixth flight and Rob Puttkammer was 17th in the seventh
flight.
Plainfield Central was 23rd with 170 points. Dan Patchin was 27th in
the championship flight (16:52). In second flight, Mike Mendez was 13th
in 16:34. In third flight, Kyle Enke was 28th in 17:32. In fourth
flight, Ryan Johnson was 23rd in 17:29, Alex Contreras was 24th in fifth
flight in 18:02. In sixth flight, John Lullo placed 24th in 18:10 and in
seventh flight, Frank Sotosanto was 31st in 18:45.
"Mike Mendez did a great job in the second flight. Other than that we
ran pretty average," Plainfield Central coach Steve Riederer said. "I
was hoping for a little better. We did run three freshmen in three of
the seven flights and that's always a factor in a meet of this
magnitude. We'll just have to get our momentum going next week because
the big ones are coming up."
Bolingbrook was 25th with 184. Myles Garza was 14th in the
championship flight. Ian Kennedy placed 23rd in the second flight. Mike
Ryndak was 24th in the third flight. John Glass placed 19th in the
fourth flight. Kevin Hardy was 34th in the fifth flight. Justin Rogness
placed 37th in the sixth flight and Jason Hantak was 33rd in the seventh
flight.
Joliet Catholic was 34th with 256 points. Sean Bredeson was 30th in
the champiuonship flight. Kevin Bernhard placed 36th in the second
flight. Matt Mujek was 38th in the third flight. Shawn Lemke placed 38th
in the fourth flight. Danny Eichholzer was 36th in the fifth flight.
Justin Sitton placed 38th in the sixth flight and Tyler Vostry was 37th
in the seventh flight.
Loyola Lakefront Invitational — At Chicago, Minooka placed ninth
in the 36-team meet that featured runners from six different states.
Quentin Capista led Minooka with a 19th place showing (16:39). Nick
Rousonelos was 28th (16:49), freshman Josh Keck was 54th (17:22), Andrew
SAntillo was 55th (17:24) and Kevin Bokoski placed 154th (18:24).
"This group took a step forward today," Minooka coach Kevin Gummerson
said. "I am very excited to see Quentin and Nick running as well as they
are. It has been great to watch their confidence grow as the season
wears on, and the greatest thing is they want to continue to improve.
"I can't say enough about the impact Josh Keck has had on this team
and Santillo ran his best race of the year."
Plainfield South was 15th with a 405 total. Peter Gerharz was 30th.
Chris Kane was 60th. Adam Werner was 98th. Nick Kane was 111th and Jack
Radford was 117th.
Lockport Fall Challenge — At Dellwood Park, Lockport was third
in the 8-team meet with 91 points. Naperville North won with 37 and
Neuqua Valley (58) was second.
Porter placers were Joe Targosz (10th, 16:47.3), Ryan Wessling (11th,
16:47.6), Sean Gosewich (20th, 16:55.8), Kyle Skinner (24th, 17:07.2)
and Kyle Engnell (26th, 17:13.8).
Kevin Havel of Hersey set a new course record, clocking a 16:00.6.
Loyola Lakefront Invitational — Lemont finished seventh out of 33
teams with 213 points.Lauren Dentzman finished 16th place in 19:52 in
the 3.1 mile race, while 20th was Katie Schmidt (19:52). Alyssa Sandoval
finished 29th with a time of 20:08, while Allie Kostes was 51st in
20:39. Amanda Costello was 114th in 21:51, Lisa Smith was 122nd in 21:56
and Emily Luzzo finished 157th in 22:24.
"The girls really ran well today," Lemont coach Tim Plotke said. "The
girls stuck together in the first two miles, and when you do that in a
big meet like this, you are going to score well. I am real proud of the
effort we put forth."
Minooka was 12th with 383 points. Placers were Kim Mason (67th,
20:54), Rachael Williams (76th, 21:07), Lizz Celmer (81st, 21:17), Kyle
Plese (88th, 21:24) and Caley Alessio (96th, 21:35).
Lisle Mane Event — At Lisle, Reed-Custer's Ryan Eichelberger
continued her spectacular season, winning the race by :51 over her
nearest competitor.
A junior, Eichelberger ran a 19:08 for 3.1 miles.
"A 51-second win at this race is just phenomenal," Reed-Custer coach
Scott Ward said. There were 48 schools and 185 runners. After the first
mile she pulled away and ran very well."
JCA was fourth with 190 points. Freshman Tara Bistry was 15th,
clocking a 21:16. Other Angel placers were Laurenn Jarema (41st), Elise
Stockl (42nd), Kelly Rocheleau (54th) and Amy
Gegenheimer (60th).
Bolingbrook placed 12th with 312 points. Raider placers were Erika
Koch (31st, 21:51), Ashley Elmore (58th, 23:07), Traci Kiley (69th,
23:19), Christina Silva (91st, 23:57) and Joanna Wolf (93rd, 24:00).
Providence Catholic was 20th with 473 points. Placers were Elizabeth
Biangmano (63rd), Michelle Francis (80th), Lauran DeCeault (86th), Liz
Regan (150th) and Katie Murphy (155th).
Romeoville did not field a complete team, but Emily Caron was 26th in
21:44. Andrea Bill (45th), Jennifer O'Malley (127th) and Brittany O'Neal
(154th) also placed.
Gardner-South Wilmington did not field a complete team. Erin Fogarty
placed 19th in 21:28. Other Panthers placers were Katie Razunas (121st),
Alisha Janssen (136th) and Sarah Wood (147th).
Wheaton North Invitational — Lockport placed fifth in the
23-team meet. Naperville North won and Wheaton North was second.
Lockport's Janna Mitsos won the meet, running a 17:42 in the first
flight. Erin Lakie was fifth in second flight in 18:31. Lindsay Kotovsky
was 11th in 19:49 in third flight. In fourth flight, Gina Montagno was
11th and had a 19:42 for 11th place. Lindsey Wyman ran a 19:38 in fifth
flight for 8th place. Lauren Wyman was seventh and ran a 20:04 in sixth
flight and Brittany Johnson was ninth and ran a 20:13 in seventh flight.
"This was the first time we finished in the top 15 individually in
all the flights, so this was a nice race for us," Lockport coach Evon
Schlotter said. "Janna winning the top flight is pretty major. That says
a lot for her."
Lewis' Tremble shines — At Chicago, Lewis' Andy Tremble turned in a
career-best performance Saturday at the 33rd annual Sean Earl Loyola
Lakefront Invitational cross country meet.Tremble clocked a 24:53,
his first time to break 25 minutes, and finished eighth among 270
competitors in the 28-team Gold Division that included 18 NCAA Division
I squads. He shattered his previous career best of 25:17, set two weeks
ago at the National Catholic Invitational, by 24 seconds.
In finishing 13th, the Flyers defeated Division I teams Xavier,
Southern Illinois, Missouri State, Central Florida, Evansville,
Illinois-Chicago, Southeast Missouri State, Illinois State, Creighton,
Marshall, DePaul and Valparaiso.
Joining Tremble in the Lewis top seven were Sinan Khamo, 70th
(25:59); Andrew Northrup, 99th (26:19); Larry Anzalone, 134th (26:50);
Alberto Villa, 190th (27:49); Emory Burdette, 193rd (27:51); and Evan
Sather, 215th (28:21).
"Andy ran an awesome race and Sinan ran pretty well, too, just a few
seconds within his time at the National Catholic," Lewis coach Rick
Wemple said.
Terran Wertz enjoyed a solid performance for the Flyer women, placing
29th among 310 runners. Wertz ran 19:33 and finished fifth among
participants from the four competing Great Lakes Valley Conference
schools (Lewis, Indianapolis, Northern Kentucky and Southern Illinois
Edwardsville) and ninth among runners from the NCAA Division II Great
Lakes Region (the four GLVC schools plus Ferris State and Saginaw Valley
State).
Joining Wertz were Juliann Szablewski, 107th (20:58); Tenleigh Ayers,
160th (21:55); Amanda Hammond, 168th (22:08); and Tiffany Meyers, 208th
(23:03). Lewis finished 20th among 27 teams.
