Karl Peter (Charley) Berg came to America from Sweden in 1881with his wife Mathilda and infant daughter Hilda. His name was Johansson and he changed his name to BERG in America.

"It is believed to have been leukemia that claimed the life of Charley Berg, four months short of his 46th birthday. It left the widow, Mathilda, and the eight surviving children with an extraordinary sense of practical, conservative responsibility. Beda, the first born, had died five or six weeks into life, leaving Hilda Elizabeth the oldest child. Hilda was born in Sweden in 1880, and had come to America with her parents at the age of nine months. She was just shy of her 19th birthday when her father died. Charles Arthur, the oldest son, was asked to step into his father's shoes and lead the family at just 16 years of age. Oscar Emil was 14; Ester Othelia not quite 12, Ellen marie just 2 days short of 10; Henning Gottfred nearly 8; David Leonard 5 years; Gustav Verner, a baby of 15 months.

This sense of responsibility and obligation led to the decision that none of the children would marry and leave home while their mother was still alive, and needed attention and care. Mathilda and family had moved, in 1909, from the farm to a home that the children had provided for her in Stockholm, South Dakaota. Mathilda died quietly in her bedroom in the afternoon of September 18, 1916, and is buried alongside her husband in Tabor Lutheran Cemetery in Strandburg, South Dakota. All her children, except Charles Arthur and Gustav Verner lie at rest in this same cemetery.

For some reason, four of the five boys were known by their middle names. Charles Arthur was Art or "C.A."; Oscar Emil was Emil; Henning Gottfred was Gottfred or "H.G."; Gustav Verner was most commonly known as Vern. David Leonard was, as named, David or "D.L.".

Art or "C.A." became a partner in the hardware and implement business with his brother, Emil in 1911. He became inactive in the partnership and moved across the street to become a banker with another brother, Vern, in 1933, becoming president of the Stockholm State Bank in 1940 until 1966.

Emil was known as an astute and honest businessman with Berg Brothers Hardware in Stockholm, SD for about 40 years.

Gottfred answered the Call of God to the ministry, serving as a Lutheran pastor for several congregations in South Dakota and Minnesota from 1926, continuing for 46 years.

David or "D.L." became postmaster at Stoockholm, SD serving from the early 1920's until the mid 1950's. Along with the post office, David and his wife operated the telephone "central" switchboard office, and a small soda fountain.

Vern became a proficient banker, starting at the Stockholm State Bank in 1933, and ending with the Parker State Bank in 1973. He served as a South Dakota state bank examiner from 1943 until 1950.

The daughters, Hilda Elizabeth and Ellen Marie, married farmers and became farm housewives; Hilda married P.P. Edeen and lived two and a half miles Southwest of Stockholm, South Dakota, and Ellen married E.N. Hallberg and lived at the Northeast edge of town.

EsterOthelia was a school teacher in Stockholm, SD from about 1909 until she married S.M. Jensen, who was the buttermaker at the Stockholm Cooperative Creamery. They later moved to Huron, South Dakota and operated a dairy.

Mathilda did not neglect instilling the element of faith in Almighty God into her children. Christian worship was promoted and nurtured throughout the lives of the eight children, and all remained members of the Lutheran Church, except Arthur, who switched his church affiliation to the Elim Covenant Church shortly after he was married.

The Berg family was not noted for gaiety or frivolity, but they expressed their humor in dry wit or clever remarks.

The early introduction to accountability resulted in a lifelong commitment to God, family, county and community for each and every member of the Charley and Mathilda Berg household.

By noting the birth/death dates of the Charley and Mathida Berg family, it can be determined that none of them died in the 70 to 80 year age group.

Charley 45 years 7 1/2 months

Mathilda 62 years 1 1/2 months

Beda 0 years 5 to 6 weeks

Hilda 68 years 2 days

Arthur 85 years 1 1/2 months

Emil 67 years 1 month

Esther 60 years 6 months
